The amount of volatile aldehydes (VAs) which was evolved by rice seeds was in direct proportion to seed vigour. The amount of VAs produced by high vigour rice seeds was more than that produced by low vigour rice seeds during early phase of germination. The peak period of VAs was evolved by natural ageing seed was in 24 to 48 h of seed inbibition. However
the amount and the peak period of VAs which was evolved by rice seeds which were in artifical ageing was in inverse proportion to seed vigour
and was in 0 to 24 h. The lipid peroxidevalue in rice seeds of low vigour was more than that of high vigour seeds.
